Where We Work
The Amara Centre works across different contexts where cancer is experienced in different ways. Our support is shaped by the understanding that needs vary depending on healthcare systems, resources, and individual circumstances. This page explains where our work is currently focused and how our approach differs between the United Kingdom and Ghana.
The Amara Centre’s focus on the United Kingdom and Ghana reflects the lived experience that inspired the organisation’s creation. Through personal connections to both countries, our founder became aware of different challenges faced by people affected by cancer and the opportunities to provide meaningful support in each context. This dual perspective continues to shape the organisation’s understanding of need, dignity and patient experience.
United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, The Amara Centre focuses on advocacy, awareness and wellbeing-focused support for people affected by cancer. This includes addressing gaps in recovery and quality of life, and responding to practical challenges that can arise during and after treatment.
Ghana
In Ghana, The Amara Centre focuses on practical support delivered through trusted local partnerships. This includes helping to address financial and access-related barriers that can affect a person’s ability to begin or continue cancer treatment, as well as supporting dignity and wellbeing during care.
How We Work Across Contexts
Our work is shaped by lived experience and responds to different needs across different contexts.
We recognise that cancer care experiences vary significantly between countries and health systems. For this reason, our support is designed to be context-sensitive rather than one-size-fits-all.
While practical support is currently focused on the United Kingdom and Ghana, we believe that advocacy, awareness and learning from lived experience can contribute to improved understanding of cancer care more widely.
