Advocacy & Awareness

The Amara Centre is committed to improving cancer awareness, understanding and engagement with lived experience.

Alongside our practical support work, we recognise that meaningful and lasting change also depends on better awareness, earlier understanding of cancer-related information, and more open conversations about the realities of living with a cancer diagnosis.

Our advocacy work is grounded in lived experience and guided by a belief that dignity, information and support should be part of every person’s cancer journey, regardless of where they live.

Our Focus

Our advocacy and awareness work includes:

  • Raising awareness of cancer and its impact on individuals, families and communities
  • Supporting greater understanding of patient experiences throughout the cancer journey
  • Encouraging informed conversations around diagnosis, treatment and wellbeing
  • Promoting awareness of relevant health information, including topics such as early awareness, screening and genetic considerations where appropriate
  • Sharing insights informed by lived experience to support more compassionate and informed approaches to cancer care

We aim to contribute to conversations that help reduce fear, stigma and misinformation, while encouraging greater understanding and empathy around cancer.

Our Approach

Our advocacy work is shaped by respect, dignity and authenticity.

We seek to engage thoughtfully, drawing on real experiences and responsible communication rather than sensationalism or fear-based messaging. We believe that awareness is most effective when it is balanced, accessible and rooted in human understanding.

The Amara Centre may engage in collaboration with organisations, healthcare professionals, community groups and advocacy initiatives in both the UK and Ghana to help strengthen awareness and share learning.

Our Commitment

We are committed to using our voice to support greater awareness and understanding of cancer, while remaining sensitive to the lived experiences of those affected.

We recognise that every cancer journey is personal. Our aim is not to generalise or simplify those experiences, but to contribute meaningfully to a broader culture of awareness, dignity and informed support.

Through both advocacy and practical assistance, The Amara Centre seeks to help improve how cancer is understood, discussed and supported within communities.
